Blue poppy seeds used for cooking confectionery caused mortality burst among Russian drug users.

Mortality rate in Chelyabinskaya oblast of Russia increased twice as a result of drug use. According to spokespersons of the Federal Drug Control Service of the Russian Federation, it was caused by the fact that drug users turned to the use of home-made design drugs. It was triggered by more frequent interceptions of large heroin consignments by local police, which resulted in rapid increase in the drug’s price from $10,000 to $15,000 per kg.
Fake drugs were made of Poppy seed squeezings , a by-product of making poppyseed oil, imported from Spain at a very cheap price. Recently a cargo of the raw material purchased, according to documents, as Blue poppy seeds used for confectionery uses, was intercepted outside Moscow. A part of this consignment which was as big as 700 tons somehow penetrated to Chelyabinskaya oblast of Russia.
Processed Spanish poppy contains very little amount of opium. That’s why drug users increased the amount of inhalant and other chemicals used in drug production. One of the specific features of the Spanish product was its being poisoned with insecticides. As a result, drug addicts who used this potion developed grave visceral injuries lading to rapid death.
Currently police tries to identify the person who organized the outflow of the confiscated poppy.
The FDCS officers admit the possibility that the poisonous poppy can suddenly appear in other regions too.
