Scottish drug users die more often in comparison with 2011. So, according to the statistics, one in 100 people in the country dies because of drug using.
Experts believe that the main reason of the increase in mortality is methadone, the artificial substitute of heroin. However, four out of five drug addicts whose deaths were caused by methadone were not being treated at the moment, they had bought it illegally. The poor quality of the illegal methadone resulted in the increase in the mortality.
However, despite the massive critics of the Methadone programme, drug therapists back it up. They suppose that in many cases doctors had to prescribe the casualties less dangerous medicines.
The drug situation within the region in 2012, the year with the highest mortality rate since 1996, caused serious discussion of Scottish policy towards the drug problem.
