Cocaine kills brain

22.08.2012

Recently the Molecular Psychiatry magazine published a research of French scientists saying that the glial cells of the brain of people who had been using cocaine for a long time die out twice faster than similar cells of people who never used the drug.

“We have got irresistible physiological proof of the fact that cocaine causes accelerated brain damage”, Dr. Laurent Karila MD of the CERTA (French Centre of Studies, Researhes and Treatment of Addictions) says.

The direct correlation between the term of using cocaine and the amount of cinerea was discovered after researching the glial cells of the brain of 120 volunteers aged 18 to 50, a half of which systematically used cocaine for several years.

The scientist paid their attention to the extreme danger of cocaine for human health due to the fact that this drug is becoming more and more popular in France. As a minimum, 3% of teenagers of 17 used cocaine at least once.

The research has also revealed brain abnormalities characteristic solely for drug addicts. They include specific cognitive disorders, weakening self-control and decision-making ability.
