New fighters against drug trafficking are to appear in Japan

22.08.2012

A pilot project of training drug-sniffing dog, able to find illegal substances in passengers’ luggage is launched by the Police Dog Service of the city of Narita, not far from the Narita Tokyo airport. If the Cynologists manage to carry out the initiative successfully, this practice will be introduced in all customs stations of the country.

At the moment, dog handlers work with German shepherd dogs and retrievers of 1-2 years old. The dogs were specially selected all over the country. Trainings started on 21 May. They will be over when the dog trainers understand that the dogs are ready for the full-scale service. Every dog is being trained together with a particular customs officer, getting accustomed to follow his orders in full obedience.

These additional measures of intensification of drug control are stipulated by a significant increase in drug smuggling through Japanese border in recent years.

“Standard detection measures are not effective any more.We hope that the dogs will help us to improve the efficiency of our work”, customs officers say.
