Yesterday the court of Dusseldorf, Germany, made an unusual verdict: a woman of 76 was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison. She was convicted of drug smuggling.
German mass media gave the old offender a stinging nickname “Drogen Großmutter” (The Drug Granny). There was a good reason for it: the investigation has found out that the woman managed to smuggle over a ton of marijuana from the Netherlands to Germany for five years. Besides drug smuggling, she is charged with aiding and abetting drug dealers.
First, the pensioner broke the law in 2006, in a Dutch city of Venlo, locatedner the German border. Then two young men kindly agreed to repair her car, in exchange they asked her to take some boxes conaining, as they said, detergent powder to Dusseldorf. The beginner drug mule received only the money to pay for petrol she spent during the trip that time. However, later her fee earnings rose up to $700 per trip.
The prosecution asked to sentence her to three years of prison, while the defense asked to take into consideration her venerable age and insisted on a suspended sentence. Finally, the judge has taken a compromise decision.
