Japanese authorities intensify rehabilitation of drug addicted prisoners

27.08.2012

The Japanese Ministry of Justice issued a prescription stipulating intensification of rehabilitation of drug addicted prisoners. This initiative is an adition to the acting programme of rehabilitation drafted and introduced into effect in 2006.

This measure resulted from recent researches, showing that the percentage of drug addicts among detainees significantly increased, and the gender proportion has changed significantly too. So, it’s reported that currently there are much more women convicted of the violation of the Law about drugs. 29% of Japanese men and 39% Japanese women are convicted of such charges.

A project of women’s penal colony of the city of Kakogava to start in 2013 is first step in the intensification of the rehabilitation of prisoners.
