Paulo Coelho confessed that he had been a drug user

30.08.2012

Recently famous Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho, the author of bestsellers popular all over the world, gave an exclusive interview to the German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung. In his interview Coelho told of his life, his work, his oeuvre and his attitude towards drugs.

The self-promotion of the writer alarms. First, he openly criticized James Joyce, a classic of Irish literature, attacking his novel Ulysses , one of the masterpieces of the XX century; then, he publicly confessed his sins of the past to his readers.

“In this life we don’t bear the responsibility for the burden we had imposed upon ourselves in our past lives. But it’s, perhaps, the consequence of my mistakes in the past; I have been rattening my life for many years by means of drugs and black magic”, Coelho laments.

A leader in respect of the number of editions (the total run of Coelho’s books is over 135 million copies), Coelho is unlikely to increase the sales level. Probably, it’s an attempt to create an image of a great philosopher, a martyr and Messiah. But it’s more likely that the reason is much deeper and we are going to fins it out soon
